April Cause Club: After the End by Clare Mackintosh

Did you know that April is National Month of Hope? Because of that, I selected Fairy Godmother Project (FGP) as our Cause Club Nonprofit. FGP,its mission, volunteers and families embody hope so it truly is the perfect organization for April. Plus, I started the organization and volunteer with them so it seems appropriate to have it as the beneficiary of my first month in my brick and mortar!!

One of the things that I witnessed in my time at FGP was the difficulty parents experienced in making decisions surrounding their child’s cancer treatment. It was described to me as seeming like a crap shoot, as too much pressure and unfair. In those years and experiences, I also realized that we might think we know what we would do in a situation like a childhood cancer diagnosis, but until you are in it, you really don’t know. I also watched people give unsolicited opinions to families on what they SHOULD do. The reality is telling anyone what they should do is not helpful but when you are looking at decisions about life and death of a child, it really isn’t time to’ should all over someone. ‘

This book looks at this and how hard it is to make decisions and especially as a couple. I found it hard to read. I will tell you that it has the potential to be a bit confusing if you miss the one key part of the story….it goes back and forth between 2 story lines about the same thing. Essentially, the author dives into what the outcome would be from both possible treatment options.
